Brownian movement is the ceaseless, random jostling of colloidal particles caused by unequal molecular bombardment from the dispersion medium, and it is one of the pieces of evidence for the colloidal, dynamic nature of protoplasm.

In a colloidal system, the medium (e.g. water in protoplasm) is made of vastly more numerous, much smaller molecules that are in continuous, random thermal motion, constantly striking the larger, dispersed colloidal particles from all directions. At any given instant, the number and force of these molecular impacts is not perfectly balanced on every side of a particle, so the particle receives a net push in a random direction. As this imbalance changes moment to moment, the particle is buffeted first one way, then another, producing the characteristic continuous, irregular, zig-zag path known as BROWNIAN MOVEMENT (named after botanist Robert Brown, who first observed it in pollen grains suspended in water).
