At certain points, the cell wall has minute pores through which thin, tubular strands of cytoplasm pass from one cell into the adjoining cell — these connecting strands are called plasmodesmata. Each plasmodesma is typically lined by the continuous plasma membrane of the two cells and often contains a central tubule called the desmotubule, which is continuous with the endoplasmic reticulum of both cells.
