A chloroplast has an outer and inner envelope membrane surrounding the stroma, within which lie stacked thylakoid discs (grana) connected by stroma lamellae — the sites of the light reactions — plus DNA, ribosomes, and starch grains for the dark reactions and self-replication machinery.

A text-based description cannot substitute for an actual hand-drawn labelled diagram, but here is the complete structure to be drawn and labelled, part by part, from outside in:

  1. Outer membrane — smooth, freely permeable envelope membrane forming the outer boundary of the chloroplast.
  2. Inner membrane — the second envelope membrane, less permeable, regulating what enters/leaves the stroma; together with the outer membrane it forms the double-membrane envelope.
  3. Intermembrane space — the thin space between the outer and inner envelope membranes.
  4. Stroma — the colourless, proteinaceous ground matrix filling the interior of the chloroplast, in which the following structures are embedded, and where the dark reaction (Calvin cycle) enzymes (including RuBisCO) operate.
  5. Thylakoid — a single flattened, membrane-bound sac/disc suspended in the stroma; its membrane holds the photosynthetic pigments and electron-transport components for the light reaction.
  6. Granum (plural grana) — a stack of several thylakoid discs, resembling a pile of coins; a chloroplast typically contains 40–60 grana.
  7. Stroma lamella (intergranal lamella) — a tubular membranous extension that connects the thylakoids of one granum to those of an adjacent granum, keeping the whole thylakoid system interconnected. …
