In acetylene, H-C≡C-H (C2H2): each carbon atom is sp hybridised, using one sp orbital to bond to the adjacent carbon (forming part of the C≡C triple bond, sigma component) and the other sp orbital to bond to a hydrogen atom. The remaining two unhybridised p orbitals on each carbon overlap sideways with those of the other carbon to form the two π bonds of the triple bond. Because sp hybrid orbitals are arranged at exactly 180° to each other, the H-C-C and C-C-H bond angles are all 180°, making the whole molecule linear.
