Hybridisation is the process in which atomic orbitals of an atom, which are close in energy (typically the s and p, or s, p and d, orbitals of the valence shell), intermix and reorganise to produce an equal number of new orbitals — called hybrid orbitals — that all have identical shape and energy, intermediate between those of the original orbitals. These hybrid orbitals are then used to form sigma bonds with other atoms, or to hold lone pairs, and they orient themselves in space to minimise electron-pair repulsion.
