Two principal commercial sources of benzene:
- From coal tar: When coal is subjected to destructive distillation (heating in absence of air, as in the manufacture of coke), coal tar is obtained as a by-product. Coal tar is further fractionally distilled, and the fraction distilling between about 80C and 170C ('light oil') contains benzene along with toluene and xylenes.
