(i) nitrobenzene
(ii) benzene sulphonic acid
(iii) BHC
OR
Simplest alkene (A) reacts with HCl to form compound (B). Compound (B) reacts with ammonia to form compound (C) of molecular formula C2H7N. Compound (C) undergoes carbylamine test. Identify (A), (B) and (C).

(This question offered an OR alternative identifying compounds A, B, C from an alkene reaction sequence; the primary question on preparations from benzene is answered below.)
- Preparation of nitrobenzene: Benzene is treated with a mixture of concentrated nitric acid and concentrated sulphuric acid (the nitrating mixture), warmed to about 323-333 K: C6H6 + HNO3 --(conc. H2SO4, ~330 K)--> C6H5NO2 + H2O The H2SO4 protonates HNO3 to generate the electrophile NO2+ (nitronium ion), which attacks the benzene ring in an electrophilic aromatic substitution.
- Preparation of benzene sulphonic acid: Benzene is heated with fuming (or concentrated) sulphuric acid: C6H6 + H2SO4 --(heat)--> C6H5SO3H + H2O This is also an electrophilic substitution, where the electrophile is SO3 (or protonated SO3) generated from the sulphuric acid.
- Preparation of BHC (benzene hexachloride, also called gammexane/lindane): Benzene is treated with chlorine gas in the presence of sunlight (UV light), which brings about a free-radical addition (not substitution) across all three double bonds of the ring: C6H6 + 3Cl2 --(sunlight)--> C6H6Cl6 (BHC) …
