Alkaline KMnO4 (Baeyer's reagent) is decolourised by ethylene but not by ethane, because only the C=C double bond in ethylene can be oxidised.

Cold, dilute, alkaline potassium permanganate solution (Baeyer's reagent) is a mild oxidising agent that reacts readily with carbon-carbon double bonds. When ethylene (CH2=CH2), an unsaturated alkene, is treated with this reagent, the double bond is oxidised (hydroxylated) to form ethylene glycol (a vicinal diol), and the purple/pink colour of KMnO4 fades to colourless (sometimes with a brown precipitate of MnO2 forming) - this positive result is Baeyer's test for unsaturation.

Ethane (CH3-CH3), a saturated alkane, has no multiple bond and is chemically inert to this mild oxidant under these conditions, so when ethane gas is passed through alkaline KMnO4, the solution's purple colour remains unchanged (negative test). …
