Electric shock can disrupt the heart's normal electrical rhythm and paralyze the muscles controlling breathing, causing both respiration and the heartbeat to stop (cardiac and respiratory arrest). Since brain cells begin to die within minutes without oxygen, immediate action is critical:
- First, ensure the source of electricity is switched off/removed safely (using a non-conducting object) before touching the victim, to avoid the rescuer also being shocked.
- Immediately begin Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): this combines rhythmic chest compressions (pressing down hard and fast on the centre of the chest to manually pump blood through the body) with artificial respiration (mouth-to-mouth breathing, or rescue breaths) to manually ventilate the lungs with oxygen. …
