The stethoscope is one of the most familiar basic medical instruments, consisting of a chest piece (diaphragm/bell) that picks up sound, connected via flexible tubing to earpieces for the examiner. Its main uses are:

Listening to breath (lung) sounds — placed on the chest/back to check normal breathing sounds and to detect abnormalities such as wheezing, crackles, or reduced air entry, which can indicate conditions like asthma, pneumonia, or fluid in the lungs.
-
Listening to bowel (intestinal) sounds — placed on the abdomen to check normal peristaltic (gut movement) sounds, helping detect blockages or reduced gut activity.
