Ultrasound imaging uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of internal soft tissues, and its clinical significance lies in being a safe (radiation-free), non-invasive tool for diagnosis and monitoring across many medical fields.

Ultrasound (sonography) works by sending high-frequency sound waves into the body via a transducer; the waves reflect off internal tissue boundaries differently depending on tissue density, and these echoes are converted into a real-time visual image.

Clinical significance / uses:

  1. Obstetrics: the most well-known use, to monitor a developing fetus during pregnancy — checking growth, position, heartbeat, and detecting developmental abnormalities, without any radiation risk to the fetus.
  2. Detecting abdominal abnormalities: identifying gallstones, kidney stones, cysts, and tumours in soft organs like the liver, kidney, gallbladder, and pancreas.
  3. Cardiac evaluation: echocardiography uses ultrasound to visualize the beating heart's chambers, valves, and blood flow in real time.
  4. Guiding procedures: used to guide needles accurately during biopsies or fluid drainage. …
