The sphygmomanometer is the standard clinical instrument for measuring blood pressure, and its readings are central to diagnosing, monitoring and managing cardiovascular and related conditions.

A sphygmomanometer consists of an inflatable cuff, a pressure-measuring gauge (mercury column, aneroid dial, or digital sensor), and typically a stethoscope for the manual method. It is wrapped around the upper arm and used to measure two values: systolic pressure (the pressure in arteries when the heart contracts and pumps blood) and diastolic pressure (the pressure when the heart relaxes between beats), normally expressed as, e.g., 120/80 mmHg.
