Hayem's solution is the standard diluting fluid for a total RBC count; it dilutes the blood without destroying the red cells.

A total RBC count is performed by drawing blood into a haemocytometer pipette and diluting it with a fixed volume of diluting fluid before loading it onto the counting chamber.

Hayem's solution (a mixture of sodium sulphate, sodium chloride and mercuric chloride in water) dilutes the blood 1:200 while keeping the red blood cells intact and rouleaux formation minimised, so they can be counted accurately in the ruled squares of the Neubauer chamber.
