The societal marketing concept extends the ordinary marketing concept by requiring a firm to balance three interests at once, rather than just two: the customer's immediate wants, the company's own profit, and society's long-term welfare (including environmental and public-health effects).

It emerged because the plain marketing concept, on its own, can still lead to outcomes that satisfy an individual customer's immediate want (say, a very cheap, heavily packaged product) while causing wider harm — environmental pollution, health problems, or resource depletion — that the customer and the firm do not have to bear the cost of directly.
