Step 1. The earliest milestones established the basic anatomy: Nehemiah Grew (1682) first identified stamens as the male organ of a flower, and R.J. Camerarius (1694) went on to describe the structure of the flower, anther, pollen and ovule.

Step 2. The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries added functional and developmental detail: J.G. Kolreuter (1761) documented the importance of insects in pollination; G.B. Amici (1824) discovered the pollen tube; Hofmeister (1848) described the structure of the pollen tetrad; Hanstein (1870) traced embryo development in Capsella and Alisma; and E. Strasburger reported polyembryony (1878) and then discovered the process of syngamy (1884).

Step 3. The turn of the twentieth century brought the single most important discovery: S.G. Nawaschin and L. Guignard, working independently in 1898-99, discovered double fertilization - the phenomenon, unique to angiosperms, in which both male gametes from one pollen tube take part in fertilization. …
