Step 1. Modern methods rest on the totipotency principle F.C. Steward demonstrated in 1932 (a single carrot phloem cell regenerating a whole plant), and are practised as tissue culture and, specifically, micropropagation (regenerating a plant from a single cell, tissue or small vegetative piece).

Step 2. Plants with desired characteristics can be multiplied rapidly, in large numbers, in a short duration - a major advantage over slower conventional or seed-based propagation.

Step 3. Because no gametes are involved, plants produced are genetically identical, and because the process happens in a controlled culture medium, it can be carried out in any season, unlike field-based propagation.

Step 4. Modern methods can propagate plants that do not produce viable seed, or whose seeds are difficult to germinate, and are especially valuable for multiplying rare and endangered species from very limited starting material. …
