At any junction of a circuit, the algebraic sum of the currents is zero, with current entering the junction taken as positive and current leaving as negative: for a junction with five currents. This is a direct statement of conservation of electric charge -- charge cannot accumulate or vanish at a junction.
Step 2 (Voltage rule). In any closed loop of a circuit, the algebraic sum of the IR products and the emfs is zero: the energy supplied by every emf source in the loop equals the total energy delivered to every resistor in that loop, a direct statement of conservation of energy.
Step 3 (Sign convention). An IR term is positive when the loop is traversed in the same direction as the assumed current, negative when traversed against it; an emf is positive when traversed from negative to positive terminal, negative the other way.
