Two molecules of phenol condense with one molecule of phthalic anhydride under acid catalysis and heat to give phenolphthalein plus water.

Phenol's ring is strongly activated toward electrophilic attack by the −OH-OH group (a powerful ortho/para director), so under the strongly acidic, dehydrating conditions of conc. H2SO4H_2SO_4 with heat, it reacts with the electrophilic carbonyl carbons of phthalic anhydride:

2 C6H5OH  +  C6H4(CO)2Ophthalic anhydride→ΔConc. H2SO4Phenolphthalein+H2O2\,C_6H_5OH \;+\; \underset{\text{phthalic anhydride}}{C_6H_4(CO)_2O} \xrightarrow[\Delta]{\text{Conc. }H_2SO_4} \text{Phenolphthalein} + H_2O
