Ernst (Ernest) Ruska built the first electron microscope in 1931, enabling far higher resolution than any light microscope.

Ordinary light microscopes are limited in resolving power by the wavelength of visible light, so structures smaller than about 200 nanometres cannot be distinguished. To see finer cell structures (organelles, membranes, macromolecules), an instrument that uses a beam of electrons, which have a much shorter effective wavelength, was needed. Ernst Ruska, along with Max Knoll, built the first working electron microscope in 1931 at the Technical University of Berlin, opening the door to modern ultrastructural (sub-cellular) studies. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1986 for this work.
