Control of cellular activities: the nucleus houses almost all of the cell's DNA, the genetic "instruction manual" that determines which proteins/enzymes the cell makes and when, so the nucleus effectively directs and coordinates all of the cell's metabolic and developmental activities - it is often called the control centre of the cell.

Transmission of heredity: because the DNA carrying the genetic information is organised into chromosomes within the nucleus, the nucleus ensures this hereditary information is accurately duplicated and distributed to daughter cells during mitosis and meiosis, passing traits from one generation of cells (and organisms) to the next.
