Electron affinity is defined as the energy change (usually released) when an electron is added to a neutral, isolated gaseous atom to form a monovalent (or higher) gaseous anion.

When a neutral gaseous atom in its ground state accepts an additional electron, energy is generally released because the incoming electron is attracted to the positively charged nucleus:
