Step 1. First law — every object continues in its state of rest, or of uniform motion in a straight line, unless acted upon by an external force. Significance: it defines inertia (resistance to change of motion) and, crucially, DEFINES what an inertial reference frame is (the frame in which the law itself holds).

Step 2. Second law — the force acting on an object equals the rate of change of its momentum, F⃗=dp⃗dt\vec F=\dfrac{d\vec p}{dt}, which for constant mass reduces to F⃗=ma⃗\vec F=m\vec a. Significance: it gives a precise, quantitative, vector relation between cause (force) and effect (change of motion); valid only in inertial frames; force is the cause of a CHANGE in motion (not of motion itself), correcting Aristotle.

Step 3. Third law — whenever one body exerts a force on a second body, the second body exerts an equal and opposite force on the first, F⃗12=−F⃗21\vec F_{12}=-\vec F_{21}. Significance: forces never occur singly but always as interaction pairs between two bodies, and (combined with the second law) it leads directly to the law of conservation of momentum for an isolated system. …
