Step 1. Mendel began his historic series of pea-hybridisation experiments in 1856, after joining the monastery of St. Thomas at Brunn and taking up plant breeding as his research interest.

Step 2. He continued this programme of controlled crosses, tracking seven pairs of contrasting characters across many generations of plants, through to 1863.
