Genetics is the branch of biological science dealing with the mechanism of transmission of characters (biological information) from parents to offspring; the term itself was introduced by W. Bateson in 1906. The field is conventionally split into four major subdisciplines. Transmission genetics (also called classical genetics, the subject of this chapter) deals with how genes pass from parents to offspring, and its foundation was laid by Mendel's study of the hereditary behaviour of seven genes in garden pea. Molecular genetics deals with the structure and function of a gene at the molecular level.
