Natural rubber is obtained by tapping the milky latex (a suspension of polyisoprene particles) that flows from specialised laticifer cells in the bark of certain plants when the bark is incised. Hevea brasiliensis, native to the Amazon basin and now extensively cultivated as a plantation crop in Kerala and other tropical regions of India, Malaysia and Indonesia, is by far the most important commercial source of the world's natural rubber, tapped by the classic diagonal herring-bone cut method.
