Tamarind (Tamarindus indica), family Fabaceae (Caesalpinioideae), is one of the classic examples used in botany to illustrate that a plant's common/scientific name does not always reflect its true geographic origin. Although the species epithet "indica" suggests an Indian origin, and the tree has been cultivated and naturalised in India for so many centuries that it is deeply woven into Indian cuisine and culture, its actual centre of origin is the tropical African region, particularly areas of East Africa such as Sudan, where its closest wild relatives still occur.
