Bonsai (from Japanese, literally 'planted in a container') is the horticultural and aesthetic art of cultivating an otherwise normal-sized tree or woody shrub species in a small, shallow pot/tray, deliberately restricting its growth so that it remains permanently miniature -- often just a few tens of centimetres tall -- while still displaying all the visual proportions and characteristics of a full-sized, mature tree in nature (a gnarled trunk, spreading canopy, exposed roots, etc.). This effect is achieved through several deliberate techniques applied over years to decades: periodic root pruning (to restrict overall growth and keep the plant pot-bound), shoot/branch pruning and pinching (to control canopy shape and encourage dense, compact growth), wiring of young branches (to train their direction and shape), and carefully controlled watering, feeding, and repotting.
