Cola nitida, commonly called the kola or cola nut tree (family Sterculiaceae/Malvaceae), is native to the tropical rainforests of West Africa. Its seeds (kola nuts) contain caffeine along with the related alkaloid kolanin, giving them a stimulant, mildly bitter character similar to coffee. The nuts are chewed fresh as a masticatory stimulant in many West African cultures, and when dried and powdered they are brewed or otherwise consumed as a beverage in place of coffee.
