Ecology is the branch of biology that studies how organisms relate to one another and to their physical surroundings — the name itself comes from the Greek oikos (house/dwelling) and logos (study). It is a fundamentally practical, experimental science: ecologists observe organisms continuously in nature and run controlled experiments to understand and predict how a species will respond to changes in its environment.
