Counting the free electrons swept through a cross-section in time dtdt (using drift velocity vdv_d) and dividing their total charge by dtdt gives the standard relation I=neAvdI=neAv_d.

Working

Consider a conductor of cross-sectional area AA, with nn free electrons per unit volume, each of charge magnitude ee, drifting with average drift velocity vdv_d along the conductor.

In a small time interval dtdt, each electron moves a distance vddtv_ddt. So all the free electrons within a cylindrical volume of length vddtv_ddt and cross-section AA (volume =Avddt=Av_ddt) will cross a given cross-section of the conductor in that time.

Number of free electrons in this volume:

dN=n(Avddt)dN=n(Av_ddt)

Total charge crossing the cross-section in time dtdt:

dq=e dN=neAvddtdq=e\,dN=neAv_ddt
