The Seebeck effect (generation of an emf from a temperature difference across a junction of two dissimilar metals) underlies thermocouples, thermopiles, and thermoelectric generators.

Applications

  1. Thermocouples -- a junction of two different metals (e.g. copper-constantan, chromel-alumel) develops a thermo-emf proportional to the temperature difference between its junctions; widely used as a simple, robust thermometer for measuring temperature over a very wide range, including in furnaces and industrial processes.

  2. Thermopiles -- many thermocouples connected in series to add up their small individual emfs, used as a sensitive detector of heat/infrared radiation (e.g. in radiation pyrometers).
