A transformer relies on a continuously changing flux to induce an EMF by mutual induction, which only alternating current can sustain, so transformers work on AC only.

A transformer consists of two (or more) coils — primary and secondary — wound on a common laminated soft-iron core. Its operation is a direct application of Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction combined with mutual inductance: an EMF is induced in the secondary coil only when the magnetic flux linked with it is changing with time, ε=−NdΦdt\varepsilon = -N\dfrac{d\Phi}{dt}.

If a steady direct current (DC) is passed through the primary, it sets up a constant magnetic flux in the core (constant in both magnitude and direction, once the current has settled). Since dΦdt=0\dfrac{d\Phi}{dt}=0 for a steady flux, no EMF is induced in the secondary coil in steady state — a transformer supplied with pure DC produces essentially zero output voltage (aside from a brief transient pulse at switch-on/off, when the current, and hence the flux, is genuinely changing).
