Operating Point
The operating point (also called the Q-point or quiescent point) is the specific point on a transistor's output characteristics at which it is set up to operate for a given application. A DC LOAD LINE is drawn on the output characteristics by joining the two extreme points (on the axis, corresponding to ) and (on the axis, corresponding to ) -- every point on this straight line satisfies the collector-loop equation for the fixed values of and in that particular circuit. Superimposing the DC load line on the family of output characteristic curves shows exactly where the transistor will actually sit (its Q-point) for any chosen base current, since the operating point must lie on BOTH the relevant curve and the load line simultaneously. Choosing the Q-point in the MIDDLE of the load line (point Q, well inside the active region) lets the transistor swing the largest possible undistorted signal in either direction and is therefore the natural choice for AMPLIFIER use -- the operating point sets the maximum signal amplitude obtainable without distortion. For SWITCH use instead, the Q-point is deliberately chosen at one of the two extremes: in the cut-off region (point R) for an open-switch state, or in the saturation region (point P) for a closed-switch state. …
What this figure shows. The same family of output characteristic curves as Figure 9.32 (a straight-line-plus-curve set for several values) is overlaid with a single straight DC load line running from the point on the x-axis (where the line crosses ) diagonally up to the point on the y-axis (where it crosses ); three points are marked along this load line -- P near the saturation end (large , small , suited to closed-switch operation), Q at the midpoint (suited to amplifier operation, maximum undistorted swing in either direction), and R near the cut-off end (small , large , suited to open-switch operation) -- collectively illustrating how the SAME load line serves both the switch and amplifier use- …
