Radioactive waste

Radioactive waste

Radioactive wastes are generated during various operations of nuclear power plants, and can exist as gas, liquid, or solid, with radioactivity levels that vary widely; depending on the level and nature of radioactivity, they are classified as exempt waste, low- and intermediate-level waste, or high-level waste. Some of this waste can remain radioactive for just a few hours, others for months, and some for hundreds of thousands of years, which is what makes long-term management such a distinct engineering challenge compared to ordinary waste streams. Radioactive waste management covers the treatment, storage, and disposal of liquid, airborne, and solid effluents from the nuclear industry, and is guided by four broad strategies for handling this waste. Limiting generation in the first place is considered the single most important consideration. For wastes with low radioactivity, dilution and dispersion is an accepted approach. Because much of the radioactivity produced in nuclear reactors and accelerators is very short-lived, delay and decay -- simply holding waste until its radioactivity has naturally fallen -- is frequently an effective strategy. For longer-lived radioactivity, the goal shifts to concentrating and confining the waste: it is sealed in corrosion-resistant containers and transported to dedicated disposal sites, though leaching of heavy metals and radionuclides from such sites remains a growing concern. India and other countries employ three specific management methods. Spent fuel pools temporarily store spent fuel discharged from reactors in cooling ponds at the reactor site, where the water shields the surroundings from radiation and absorbs the heat generated by ongoing radioactive decay. Vitrification encases waste in dry cement casks to prevent further reaction or degradation over extended periods. Geological repositories are deep, engineered disposal facilities excavated within a stable geological environment, designed to provide long-term isolation and containment without requiring ongo …
