Xerophytes are classed as ephemerals (drought escapers), succulents (water-storing, drought-avoiding) and non-succulents (true drought-enduring xerophytes).

Xerophytes are plants adapted to live in dry (xeric) habitats where water is scarce. Based on how they meet water scarcity, they are classified into three groups — a topic in the NCERT/CBSE-aligned TS Intermediate ecological-adaptation unit:

1. Ephemerals (drought escapers / drought evaders):

  • These are short-lived desert annuals that complete their whole life cycle very quickly (a few weeks) during the brief rainy period, and survive the dry season as seeds.
  • They do not really resist drought — they simply escape it.

2. Succulents (drought-avoiding / drought-resisting):

  • Fleshy plants that store large amounts of water in their swollen tissues to use during dry periods.
  • Stem succulents — water stored in fleshy green stems, e.g. Opuntia (prickly pear).
  • Leaf succulents — water stored in fleshy leaves, e.g. Aloe, Agave.
  • They reduce water loss with thick cuticle, sunken stomata, etc.

3. Non-succulents (true xerophytes / drought endurers): …
