Hydrophytes are water plants; the main kinds are free-floating, rooted-with-floating-leaves, submerged-rooted, submerged-free-floating and amphibious (emergent) hydrophytes.

Meaning:

    • Float freely on the water surface; not rooted in the soil.
    • Examples: Pistia, Eichhornia (water hyacinth), Wolffia, Lemna.
  2. Rooted hydrophytes with floating leaves:
    • Rooted in the mud at the bottom, but their leaves float on the surface.
    • Examples: Nymphaea (water lily), Nelumbo (lotus).
  3. Submerged rooted hydrophytes:
    • Rooted in the mud and completely submerged in water.
    • Examples: Hydrilla, Vallisneria.
