Hydrophytes are water-adapted plants, classified by their degree of contact with water into free-floating, rooted-floating, submerged (free or rooted), and amphibious/marsh types.

Hydrophytes are plants that grow wholly or partly submerged in fresh or salt water, showing special adaptations such as reduced/absent cuticle, well-developed aerenchyma for buoyancy and gas exchange, and reduced xylem/root system.

Based on their relationship to water, hydrophytes are grouped into:

  1. Free-floating hydrophytes: float freely on the water surface, roots not anchored to the substratum. E.g. Eichhornia (water hyacinth), Pistia (water lettuce), Lemna, Wolffia.
  2. Rooted (anchored) with floating leaves: rooted in the mud at the bottom, but leaves and flowers float on the surface. E.g. Nymphaea (water lily), Nelumbo (lotus).
  3. Submerged free-floating: entirely submerged, not rooted in soil, floating within the water column. E.g. Ceratophyllum, Utricularia (bladderwort, also insectivorous). …
