Xerophytes are plants adapted to grow in dry (arid) habitats where water is scarce. Based on how they cope with water shortage they are classified into three groups:
- Ephemerals (Drought-escapers / evaders): These are short-lived plants that complete their life cycle very rapidly during the brief rainy period (a few weeks), and survive the dry season as seeds. They avoid drought rather than resist it. They are not truly resistant to drought. Example: Tribulus, Cassia.
