Xerophytes are plants adapted to grow in dry (arid/xeric) habitats where water is scarce. Based on their mode of adaptation to water stress, xerophytes are broadly classified into three categories:
-
Ephemerals (drought-escaping/drought-evading xerophytes): Short-lived annual plants that complete their life cycle rapidly during the brief favourable rainy period, and survive the unfavourable dry period only as seeds. E.g., many desert annuals.
-
Succulent xerophytes (drought-resistant, water-storing): These store large amounts of water in fleshy leaves, stems or roots for use during dry periods; they often have reduced leaf surface (leaves modified into spines) with the stem taking over photosynthesis, a thick cuticle, and CAM photosynthesis to reduce water loss. E.g., Opuntia (cactus), Aloe, Agave.
