Coal gasification is the reaction of red-hot coke (coal) with steam at high temperature to give a mixture of CO and H2 (syngas / water gas):

C(s)+H2O(g)→1270 KCO(g)+H2(g)C(s) + H_2O(g) \xrightarrow[1270\,K]{} CO(g) + H_2(g)

This mixture alone contains only one mole of H2 per mole of CO. To increase the yield of dihydrogen from this mixture, the water-gas shift reaction is used: the syngas is mixed with more steam and passed over a catalyst (a mixture of iron chromate, Fe2O3/Cr2O3Fe_2O_3/Cr_2O_3, or similar), which converts the CO into additional H2 and CO2:

CO(g)+H2O(g)→673 KcatalystCO2(g)+H2(g)CO(g) + H_2O(g) \xrightarrow[673\,K]{catalyst} CO_2(g) + H_2(g) …
