Demineralised water (also called deionised water) is water that has been freed of all dissolved mineral salts — i.e., both the dissolved cations (Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Na⁺, etc.) and anions (Cl⁻, SO4²⁻, HCO3⁻, etc.) have been removed.

How it is obtained: by the ion-exchange method described earlier (see the softening-of-hard-water process): ordinary/hard water is passed successively through

  1. a cation-exchange resin, which removes all cations, replacing them with H⁺ ions, and then
  2. an anion-exchange resin, which removes all anions, replacing them with OH⁻ ions.

The H⁺ and OH⁻ ions released then combine to form water:

H+(aq)+OH−(aq)→H2O(l)H^+(aq) + OH^-(aq) \rightarrow H_2O(l) …
