Hard water is water containing dissolved calcium and magnesium salts that prevent soap from lathering easily. It is classified into two types based on the anions present:

Temporary hardness: caused by the presence of dissolved bicarbonates of calcium and magnesium — Ca(HCO3)2Ca(HCO_3)_2 and Mg(HCO3)2Mg(HCO_3)_2. This type of hardness can be removed simply by boiling the water, which decomposes the soluble bicarbonate into an insoluble carbonate that precipitates out:
