Limulus is a marine chelicerate (class Merostomata). Its respiratory organs are book gills, found on the ventral side of the opisthosoma (abdomen). Each book gill is a flattened appendage bearing numerous thin, leaf-like lamellae stacked like the pages of a book, which greatly increases the surface area for gaseous exchange with the surrounding water.
