What is it?

Aristotle's lantern is a complex masticatory (chewing) organ found around the mouth of certain echinoderms, most notably sea urchins (class Echinoidea). It is built from five calcareous plates (ossicles) arranged in a lantern-like shape, operated by a coordinated system of muscles. The plates converge to form five tooth-like structures that can protrude slightly beyond the mouth.
