Cephalization is the evolutionary trend of concentrating sensory structures, nerve ganglia and the mouth at the front end of the body - the origin of a true 'head' - and it is closely tied to bilateral symmetry and unidirectional (head-first) locomotion.

What is cephalization?

Cephalization refers to the tendency, seen in bilaterally symmetrical animals from flatworms upward, for nervous tissue (brain/cerebral ganglia), major sense organs (eyes, antennae, chemoreceptors) and the mouth to become localised and concentrated at the anterior end of the body, forming a distinct head region, rather than being spread diffusely as in radially symmetrical animals such as Hydra.

Why it is useful to its possessors:

  1. First contact with the environment - since the animal habitually moves head-first, the anterior end is the first part to encounter food, predators, mates and other stimuli, so placing sense organs there gives the earliest possible warning/detection.
  2. Faster, more efficient response - with the brain/ganglia close to the sense organs and mouth, nerve impulses travel a shorter distance, allowing quicker processing and coordinated responses (e.g., seizing food, avoiding a predator).
  3. Better coordination of feeding - with the mouth at the anterior end near the sense organs used to locate food, feeding becomes more efficient. …
