What is cephalization?
Cephalization is the evolutionary trend, seen in bilaterally symmetrical animals, in which sense organs (eyes, antennae, chemoreceptors) and a concentration of nerve cells (forming ganglia or a primitive brain) become localized at the anterior end of the body, which becomes recognizable as a distinct head.
Why it is useful:
- A bilaterally symmetrical animal typically moves in one direction, head-first. Placing the sense organs at the front means the animal detects food, mates, predators and other stimuli in its path before the rest of the body reaches that point.
- Concentrating nerve cells near the sense organs shortens the pathway between sensory input and motor response, allowing faster and more precise reactions (e.g., quickly avoiding a predator or turning toward food). …
