Aristotle's lantern is a lantern-shaped internal jaw apparatus, unique to certain echinoderms, used for biting and scraping food.

What is it?

Aristotle's lantern is an elaborate, calcareous, five-part jaw and tooth apparatus located around the mouth on the oral (lower) surface of certain echinoderms - most notably regular sea urchins (class Echinoidea). It is made up of about 40 skeletal plates and muscles arranged around five long, chisel-like teeth, and the whole structure resembles an old-style five-sided lantern in shape - hence the name, first described by Aristotle.
