Tobacco, whether smoked as cigarettes, bidis or cigars, or used in smokeless forms, delivers nicotine along with thousands of other harmful chemicals and tar deep into the respiratory tract, and chronic exposure damages the airways and lungs in several distinct ways. It paralyses and, with continued exposure, eventually destroys the protective cilia that normally line the respiratory tract and sweep out mucus and trapped particles, leading to chronic cough and a heightened susceptibility to repeated respiratory infections.
