'Kranz' anatomy, with its distinctive bundle sheath cells, belongs to C4 plants adapted to hot, dry, tropical conditions, and it gives them a real advantage over C3 plants by letting them concentrate CO2 and avoid photorespiration.

Plants that follow the C4 pathway are specifically those adapted to dry tropical regions, and they are distinguished by a special type of leaf anatomy. If a vertical section of a C4 leaf is compared with a C3 leaf, the difference is most obvious around the vascular bundles: C4 leaves have particularly large cells surrounding the vascular bundles, called bundle sheath cells, and leaves showing this arrangement are said to have "Kranz" anatomy — "Kranz" meaning "wreath," a fitting description of how these cells encircle the bundle.
