Two drawbacks of Rutherford's atomic model:
- Instability of the atom: According to classical electromagnetic theory, an accelerating charge (and an electron revolving in a circular orbit is always accelerating, since its direction of velocity keeps changing) must continuously radiate electromagnetic energy. As the orbiting electron loses energy, its orbital radius should continuously shrink, causing it to spiral inward and eventually collapse into the nucleus in a fraction of a second. This contradicts the observed stability of atoms.
- Could not explain line spectra: If the electron were continuously losing energy and spiralling inward, its frequency of revolution (and hence the frequency of radiation emitted) would change continuously, producing a continuous spectrum. But atoms are observed to emit/absorb radiation only at certain sharp, discrete wavelengths (line spectra), which Rutherford's model could not account for.
